About The Kemet Collection
Kemet directly translates as “black land”, and “kem” meaning “black” in Ancient Egyptian. The name is derived from the colour of the rich, fertile, black soil surrounding the Nile. Darkness is often associated with the night and endings. It is rarely associated with new life and regeneration. What if we could embrace the ecological wisdom of soil, one of the most adaptive and intelligent living systems on earth? Decaying organic matter becomes the fertile bedrock of dark-brown, nutrient-rich soil in which life flourishes. What if we could observe loss, upheaval, and decomposition in our lives, not as something to fear, but as a natural process of rejuvenation and rebirth; regenerative forces creating fertile ground for new seeds to sprout. PICHULIK ́s Kemet Collection is a votive for new beginnings. It asks the question: What in our lives must be ploughed to nourish new growth? What intention will grow new roots? How do we care for and nurture ourselves when our hopes and dreams are in gestation?
The palette is terrestrial. Dark, earthy tones of black, brown, and rust-red are contrasted with the freshness of jade green and sky blue. Gemstones of jasper, jade, and pearl embellish bold sculptural silhouettes. Repetitive, rhythmic patterns mimic the fecundity of nature, exemplified by the Inanna Choker. Ancient Fertility symbols of flowers, fruits, and shells are our hieroglyphs. The pearl daisy motif in the Freya earrings; the pomegranate shape of the Granada.
About The Brand
PICHULIK is an ethical jewellery and accessories atelier based in Cape Town, South Africa. Rooted in Africa, and inspired by ancient traditions, mythology and cultures around the world, PICHULIK uses the language of African artistry and ornamentation to create sculptural accessories that celebrate empowering feminine narratives. Each piece is a talisman, handcrafted from repurposed rope, and combined with cast-brass elements, precious stones and unexpected organic materials, to create distinctive, sculptural forms. PICHULIK accessories tell the stories of lineages of powerful women across continents, and centuries and we use these narratives to build a history that is ours – where a woman, in all shapes, colours, sizes and beliefs, is the lead protagonist in the tale. PICHULIK is growing a conscious and kind African women economy: Employing women, outsourcing to women, developing women. Each PICHULIK piece is intentionally designed, and consciously sourced and crafted.
